time for new sunnies: optically review

(Disclaimer: I received this product for review, however, all opinions are my own. For more information on this, please click here.)

One of my favorite accessories, especially for summer, are sunglasses. However, as someone with incredibly bad vision, I usually go for prescription sunnies because I wear my glasses more often than my contacts. So when Optically.co reached out to try out a pair of glasses, I knew I had to try a pair of prescription sunglasses. Let’s take a look (get it?) at the pair!

wardrobe: h&m, otherwise known as my obsession with online shopping

online shopping at h&m

Oh yes, I do shop online too much for my own good. It also doesn’t help if you sign up for all those email newsletters and get the deals sent straight to your phone. So, I thought for my next post on my wardrobe series, I would feature a shop that is both affordable and stylish – h&m.

If you’ve never been inside a physical h&m shop, it’s basically a huge store with just about every style you could think of: preppy, sporty, flirty, festival-y, you name it, they got it. However, if you’re like me and the thought of combing every rack for something you would like scares you, never fear! Online shopping is here! I am a huge proponent of online shopping, because (1) it’s easy, (2) there’s more sizes online, and (3) I could do it from the comfort of my bed, without doing my makeup.

Whenever I shop online, I tend to be more reserved and pick pieces I know looks good with my body shape. I’m all about them circle skirts and flowy dresses. Plus, I stick to patterns that could pair well with basic white, grey, or black tees. I’m such a neutrals kind of girl, but I do like to pick up some fun colors (usually pink or blue…sometimes both!).

Some tips for online shopping:

  1. Sort by your size. Nothing hurts worse than finding something you love, only to find out they don’t have it in stock. If you’re picky about color, most shops have that sort feature as well!
  2. Have a game plan! If you aimlessly add things to your basket, you’ll find you’ve racked up a huge total, really quick. By knowing what you’re shopping for, you’ll avoid adding in those items you thought were sort of cute, but not a 100% sure you’d wear.
  3. Set a budget. Unless you could afford to spend hundreds on clothes, setting a budget for yourself helps you keep your clothing expenses at a minimum.
  4. Review your cart. If you spend hours shopping online, you might have some items that are really similar or you’ve fallen out of love while sitting in your cart. Always have a review before you pay.
  5. If they’ve got it, sign up for their rewards card (they’re usually free) to earn points on purchases, especially for shops you think you’ll be returning to.
  6. Read up on their return policy. Most shops have great policies (like free shipping back or you could return it to their physical location), but it’s great to read up on them because you never know how well something will fit unless you’ve tried them before. Along the same lines, keep the tags on until after you’ve tried them and know you want to keep it.
  7. Finally, have fun! It’s just like shopping, but without all the pressure.

Here are my picks from H&M:

01. sleeveless tie blouse | 02. wide-cut top | 03. patterned dress | 04. textured skirt | 05. patterned skirt | 06. twill shorts high waist | 07. chiffon cardigan

wardrobe: summer essentials

wardrobe: summer essentials

Summer is in full swing, which means hot, long days and a new wardrobe. Well, maybe not a new wardrobe, but I do find the changing of the seasons to be a great time to update your wardrobe. This summer, I found myself drawn to a lot of bright, fun things, which is weird, since I tend to stick to more neutral, darker colors.

01. cropped jeans – I bought several pairs of cropped jeggings from american eagle, mainly because they had a sale, but also because they are the softest, most comfy jeans below $50. I have them in so many washes and distresses and they look good with every outfit. plus they look great with cuffed bottoms – and I’m so happy that it’s back in style. (As a short person, cuffs are always a thing.)

02. cute and comfy wedges –  I have always been a fan of toms wedges, so the flatter style was instantly added to my shoe collection. I bought the lighter shades, which is out of the norm for me. I’m all about the black shoes, but I needed to branch out for more colors to match more outfits.

03. flirty denim skirt – It’s been a while since I’ve had denim skirts and they just remind me of high school, but I love the shape of these from H&M. It’s flattering for my shape, and it’s casual and fun. This skirt plus a graphic tee is the perfect summer outfit. It’s also affordable and could be used all year round.

04. fun nail polish – I am in love with neutral pastel (not sure if that’s what it’s called) nail polish. formula x is my go-to right now, since the application is great and the color payoff is amazing. I am in love with whites, pinks, and purples, all in pastel. Plus, it looks amazing on both your hands and feet, so just a couple of colors will last you all summer long.

05. flowy mini dress – free people always has held a special place in my heart and I love these ombred flowy dresses. I like the tapered bottom, and it’s so cute on. You could easily dress them up or dress them down, plus they are really comfortable. I love pairing this with a jean jacket – something about it is so fun.

06. oversized glasses – Being a part of the four-eyed population, warby parker has been my go-to for prescription glasses. A few months ago, I had problems with ordering with them, but this last batch went off without a hitch, so they have restored my faith in their glasses. I picked up this pair – I love the hint of color, while staying a bit neutral.

favorite looks from the grammys + baftas

Last night was a pretty big night for award shows! There were the BAFTAs and the Grammys. I love looking at the looks from award shows – and I’ve narrowed down my top favorite looks from last night!

taylor swift looked fabulous! The color of her dress (that blue/green gradient!) is to die for, plus I love the cut. It’s so sleek.

anna kendrick looked stunning in her pant suit! I love how sexy, yet sophisticated she looked. The soft curls went perfectly with the suit.

rosamund pike has been looking amazing all award season. This simple black number was sleek and smart. I also love her hair, simple to go with her gown.

jhene aiko had an amazing gown! The contrasting textures were so beautiful and the color was so soft. I adore the bodice – it looked like flower petals.

tanya burr – is it any surprise that I would include Tanya? I always think she looks so chic, and I love the detail on the bodice and it goes well with the plain, but bright skirt. J’adore!

a love for ray-bans

Since I was in the 4th grade, I had to wear glasses. I started off with those round Harry-Potter-esque frames and have graduated to wearing stylish lenses. My prescription hasn’t changed for several years, but when I went to the optometrist last month, my eyesight got worse! Since then, I have been on the hunt for new glasses. Typically, I order them from Warby Parker, but I had a very horrible time ordering a pair this past month, so I had to find an alternate glasses shop.

That’s when I discovered glasses.com, which I instantly fell in love with. They had all my favorite glasses brands – including ray-ban. I went and bought both an optical pair and sunglasses pair (which you need in sunny California!).

The packaging was amazing! I absolutely adored it – it was a wonderful experience from the get-go. I saved both boxes because of how beautiful they were. There were these cute little sayings all throughout the packaging (including on the bottom of the box!), so it was definitely love at first sight. (No pun intended!)

I picked up two pairs of glasses. The optical glasses I have purchased was Ray-Ban RX5286 in Blue & Horn Grey. I have like a face that’s in between a round and an oval, so square/rectangular frames definitely suit my face shape better. I tried round frames and they were horrible. Either way, these frames were perfect. glasses.com has a 15 day try-on policy, which came in handy because I originally ordered a Coach pair that was slightly too big. They replaced it in like 3 days. It was quick! I would definitely recommend going that route since you don’t know how a pair of glasses will fit until you receive it.

The second pair I picked up was the Ray-Ban Clubmaster in Shiny Black. I love these sunnies! Yes, they are rounder frames, but because you can’t really see my cheekbones, it works! I think they are super stylish. I also was inspired by Tanya Burr and Jim Chapman of youtube who showed off their pairs on instagram. However, I think they are a perfect, classic shape that you should definitely check out. The lenses are green, but I think it looks so great with the black and gold.

Overall, my shopping experience with glasses.com was one of the best experiences. I came out of it with two amazing pairs of glasses. They have a wide selection and always have free lenses (and, sometimes, like the time I purchased these, they have the high-index lenses for free too!). If you are looking to replace your glasses (or even purchase a spare pair), I would highly suggest you head on over to glasses.com. You won’t regret it.

clothing haul: presents to myself!

Christmas has come and gone, and because I’m in a completely different place from my family, it didn’t feel as special. I found myself missing sitting around and playing Santa. It’s definitely not the same shipping off presents a few days before Christmas, but I am hoping that they enjoyed it. Either way, I found myself shopping for myself more than usual this holiday. I did my fair share of online shopping, plus I hit Express while they had 50% off the entire store (!!!) because I just love Express clothes.

First up! I shopped a lot of Black Milk Clothing this holiday. I am a huge skater dress fan – I find it fits me well and so I picked up two different skater dresses. First up was their Galaxy skater dress, because I love love love stars. Also, in the same starry vein, I bought a crop top (!!!). I am super self conscious, so I sort of bought it because I need to feel more comfortable in my skin. This top would look amazing with a black skater skirt (I have tons of those), but I am also on the hunt for a great black maxi skirt to wear this with.

If you don’t know this, I am also a huge Harry Potter fan, so I had to pick up their Daily Prophet dress. It was so pretty and I just had to have it. I added to the Harry Potter obsession with a Deathly Hallows crop top. Not sure which style I like better (sleeves or sleeveless), but I think this is a great, yet subtle homage to the amazing book series.

Lastly, I bought some great pieces from Express. I am a huge fan of peplum, so I bought a deep red top. Peplum just looks good on my figure, so I thought getting it in a sort of holiday color would be fun. Also, their Portofino shirts are amazing, so I picked one up in a deep, dark blue. I’m one of those people who once I find a nice fit or quality, I buy it in a billion colors, so I have both of these tops in various other (albeit brighter) colors. The last piece I picked up is a staple – black leggings. I love black leggings, so buying them at half off was great and I knew I had to pick one up.

So, there you have it – my clothing haul! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and share any great fashion finds!

crushing on: nike

crushingon-nike1 crushingon-nike2 crushingon-nike3
Who else is in love with Nike’s Summer ’14 collection? When I first saw it on Pinterest, I squee-ed like crazy. Seriously, it is so pretty! I want to buy all the leggings, just because of how beautifully colored they all are. I’m also lusting over these training shoes – I want them in every. single. color. Cute workout clothes are part of my motivation – I know, so bad! But, hey, you gotta look good when you’re running, right? Check out Nike’s website for all the new stuff!

color crush: pink

Maybe it’s because Valentine’s Day is coming up, or maybe I’m feeling a little girly, but I have been crushing on pink for the last week. It’s making me want to buy pale pink everything! I love how delicate pink can look – it’s softer than red, which I feel is so strong for valentine’s day. You’ll see me sporting pink on Friday – it’s just cuter!

crushing on: redbubble

If you haven’t noticed, I am sort of a geek (yep, totally okay with being called a geek too!). I love tons of different fandoms, which means I need a place to buy things that represent my geekiness. Enter redbubble, a site I have been crushing on for a while.

If you haven’t been to the site, it’s a marketplace for artists (sort of like Etsy). However, the artist provides the art and redbubble does the rest. You can make iPhone cases, t-shirts, hoodies, prints, and more. And when you but from a shop, the artist gets a commission! I love supporting budding artists, so this is definitely the site for me.

I have bought the above phone case (based off the Companion Cubes from the Portal games – another write up on that coming up real soon), as well as a couple of t-shirts. The site is perfect for getting someone a geeky gift based off their interests. I always check here first before buying someone a gift because you might find something that fits someone better than the official merch.

So, what are you waiting for? Go support aspiring artists and fill your closet/walls/bags with some cool art pieces!

aerie’s real campaign

Who else is loving this new ad campaign by aerie? The lingerie brand of American Eagle is making me all kinds of happy right now. Their new tagline? The real you is sexy. I am in love with this. They vow to not retouch their girls or supermodels – and I think this is a step in the right direction. I’m not going to lie – when I see magazines, I cringe a little. I know a good majority of the images are photoshopped and it breaks my heart. My motto – everyone is beautiful. I hope other companies take a page from aerie’s playbook and start doing this. It’s crazy to think about how many people are constantly feeling down about themselves about not looking as good as the people in the magazines. But what’s even crazier is that the people in the magazines don’t look like the girls in the magazines! Let’s all take this stand, because the real you is sexy.

If you haven’t been to their website yet, the new photos are up and they look gorgeous!
